Logan Energy plans to perform the first full-scale test of fuel-cell energy running on propane at the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Barking Sands, Kauai.
The Atlanta-based company will barge the propane over from Honolulu for the 300-kilowatt project.
“The aim is to allow the military to use fuel cells in locations where they normally can’t,” said Keith Spitznagel, Logan’s senior vice president of marketing.
He said the project fits into the Navy’s goals of achieving self-sufficiency and energy reliability on its bases.
Fuel-cell systems efficiently convert the chemical energy in fuel directly into electrical energy with nearly zero emissions of pollutants.
The company received $900,000 in federal stimulus funding for the project.
