The idea is to mix small quantities of hydrogen with the natural gas. Users will therefore have access to hydrogen at any point traversed by the pipeline provided they have a selective membrane which is permeable to hydrogen but not larger molecules. It is hoped this will boost the sale of fuel cells. Laying a separate hydrogen pipeline might ultimately become worthwhile.
Although the hydrogen will slightly alter the calorific value the gas user will probably not notice the difference.
The European research will primarily focus on the safety aspects of transport, distribution, and use of methane/hydrogen mixtures and the possible effect of hydrogen on the flow of gas.
Eventually a suitable separation membrane will be developed.
The Naturalhy project will run for 5 years and will involve 39 participants from throughout Europe. From the Netherlands TNO, ECN, Shell Hydrogen, and NEN will be involved. The cost will mostly be met by the European Commission.
