Tokyo--Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. <7011> plans to launch sales of so-called solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) by 2005 for use in large buildings, offices, hotels and hospitals, company officials said Wednesday.

The product will be sold as a cogeneration system combining a 50-kilowatt SOFC of the mono-block layer built (MOLB) type with a gas turbine, they said.

The system, which will be priced at about several hundred million yen, draws attention from several potential buyers, officials said.

Mitsubishi Heavy plans to mass produce the product from 2008-2009 and cut the price.

A fuel cell generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. It is eco-friendly, with high power-generation efficiency.
