An important step towards the commercialisation of solid oxide fuel cells was achieved when Topsoe Fuel Cell’s long-term partner Wärtsilä succeeded in the start-up of a 20 kWe alpha prototype On 24 October 2007.

The 20 kWe prototype is the largest prototype in operation to date. The start-up is the result of a joint effort with Topsoe Fuel Cell who has manufactured, tested and supplied fuel cell stacks: The 24 stacks delivered for the alpha prototype amount to the largest number of stacks delivered until now. During the construction phase of the WFC20 unit, Topsoe Fuel Cell has worked closely with Wärtsilä.

“The start-up is a significant achievement in terms of production and reliability on the path towards the commercialisation of fuel cells. We look forward to continuing our cooperation with Wärtsilä,” says General Manager Claus Olsen.

Topsoe Fuel Cell assisted at the start up and has followed the progress of the AC power output to the grid. The fuel cell unit is fuelled by natural gas from the grid where the fuel processing takes place in a WFC20 stand alone unit. It is with great satisfaction that Topsoe Fuel Cell notes that the unit and fuel cells have performed according to plan.
