the Way for Hydrogen on Demand(R) Cartridges on Aircraft
EATONTOWN, N.J.--Millennium
Cell Inc. (NASDAQ:MCEL) announced today that the U.S. Department of Transportation
("DOT") issued a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) proposing to permit
the transportation in carry-on baggage on passenger aircraft of micro fuel
cell systems which utilize sodium borohydride fuels being developed by
Millennium Cell to power consumer electronic devices. Millennium Cell is
in discussions with a number of consumer electronics OEM's regarding potential
products and these new regulations will allow convenient consumer mobility.
This NPRM is part of the DOT's ongoing
process of harmonizing US and international regulations, and was expanded
(beyond the current scope of the international regulations) to include
fuel types used in Millennium Cell's hydrogen batteries. This expansion
was a result of a petition for rulemaking submitted by Millennium Cell
on August 23, 2006. The rule requires that fuel cell cartridges and systems
conform to design and performance standards issued by the International
Electrotechnical Commission. In addition, the notice proposes to allow
up to three fuel cartridges per passenger carried onto the aircraft.
"The proposed rulemaking by the U.S.
DOT is a significant step forward towards the use of Hydrogen on Demand(R)
fuel cartridges in micro fuel cell powered consumer devices," said Adam
P. Briggs, Millennium Cell President. "We have taken a leadership role
in the development of these codes and standards that enable consumers to
carry products onto passenger aircraft. This is a very important step in
our goal to commercialize hydrogen batteries for consumer electronics applications."
