COLUMBUS, Ohio--Third Frontier Funding Allows GrafTech International Ltd. Opportunity to Turn Ideas into Reality
Ohio's supportive business environment and significant government initiatives are helping companies research, develop and commercialize cutting-edge technology in the fuel cell industry, according to the Ohio Business Development Coalition (OBDC), the nonprofit organization that markets the state for capital investment. Through the help of programs such as the Third Frontier Program, Ohio is an ideal location for companies dedicated to delivering fuel alternatives to the world.
One example of a company on the forefront of innovation is Cleveland, Ohio-based GrafTech International Ltd. (GrafTech) which was recently recognized for its GRAFCELL(R) technology. GRAFCELL(R) flow field plates have been instrumental in the development and commercialization of next-generation fuel cells by improving power and performance.
President George W. Bush recently highlighted GrafTech as a leader in alternative energy technology development and commercialization. During his visit, President Bush viewed a demonstration of a fork-lift truck powered by GRAFCELL(R) technology. GRAFCELL(R) also has applications in fuel cell stacks, transportation vehicles and portable applications.
"President Bush's visit marked an excellent opportunity to showcase how fuel cells can be used as an environmentally friendly alternative energy source," said Craig Shular, chief executive officer of GrafTech. "Ohio's dedication to technology innovation coupled with its access to a world-class supply chain and a talented, educated workforce is vital in building a strong foundation for the widespread application of alternative energy systems."
The core of GrafTech's funding is provided by the Third Frontier Project, a 10-year, $1.6 billion initiative that fosters the creation of high-paying jobs through innovation, research and development and the commercialization of next-generation products designed to improve the lives of Ohioans and people around the world.
As one of the few places where all phases of fuel cell development takes place, from research and development to component suppliers and final product manufacturing, Ohio continues to develop a supportive business environment for fuel cell companies and other alternative energy sources.
Ohio has committed to developing alternative energy technologies. Governor Strickland recently presented his Energy, Jobs and Progress plan that will achieve three objectives:
*
Ensure affordable and stable energy prices to protect Ohio consumers
and existing Ohio jobs
*
Attract energy jobs of the future through an Ohio advanced energy
portfolio standard
*
Safeguard Ohio families by empowering consumers and modernizing
Ohio's energy infrastructure
Through this new proposal, Ohio has set a goal for 25 percent of the electricity sold in the state to come from alternative energies by 2025.
"Since 2002, the Ohio fuel cell industry has attracted major investments to the state and we are committed to continuing as a strong partner with Ohio's alternative energy industry," said Gov. Ted Strickland. "In addition to the many business incentive programs the state offers to companies that create new jobs, we've also recently passed the most significant tax reform in Ohio in at least a half century in order to create a supportive and encouraging environment for new investment."
"Ohio is the perfect place for businesses to thrive," said Ed Burghard, executive director for the Ohio Business Development Coalition. "Its also a place where personal lives can flourish. Ohio offers a unique mix of micropolitan and metropolitan city structures, and that's what makes the state so appealing. It provides executives the resources and time to pursue both their professional goals and personal aspirations without having to compromise one for the other. Ohio truly is the state of perfect balance."
