A
5kW Plug Power Gencore PEM fuel cell provided power for 50 state-of-the-art
low energy theatre lights at the launch of Arcola Energy on Friday 20 July
2007. The portable fuel cell was provided through a joint venture between
London Hydrogen Partnership, Transport for London and Camden Council. Lighting
equipment was provided by Stage Electrics and White Light.
Arcola Energy is an ambitious project created by London's Arcola Theatre, one of the UK's leading fringe venues. It includes:
• Becoming the world's first carbon
neutral theatre, through the installation of biomass heating, solar panels,
fuel cells and energy saving technologies.
• Creating a new energy technology
"incubator" within the theatre which will provide a unique creative environment
for both lab and desk based new energy companies as well hosting demonstrations
and field trials
•Presenting new energy technologies
to 70,000 theatre audience members as well hundreds of young people through
an extensive education programme.
The Arcola's plans have been spearheaded by Dr Ben Todd, the theatre's Executive Director. He said: "Implementing clean energy technologies at Arcola will be a very powerful tool in raising awareness of their practicality and relevance. We believe that in creating the first centre for new energy technology in the arts, we will be paving the way for cross-fertilisation between the arts and the sciences. As a theatre, we have a longstanding tradition of innovation, inspiration and deep integration with the local community. Working to the same principles, we aim to pioneer practices that will fundamentally change the way arts organisations work."
