Patents cover certain low-cost, passive Hydrogen on Demand(R) system designs

EATONTOWN, N.J.--Millennium Cell Inc. (NASDAQ:MCEL) announced today that it has received a Notice of Allowance from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office for US Patent Application Publication Number 2003/0009942 A1 entitled "Differential Pressure-Driven Borohydride Based Generator," and US Patent Application Publication Number 2004/0047801 A1 entitled "Method and System for Generating Hydrogen by Dispensing Solid and Liquid Fuel Components."

The two newly allowed applications describe hydrogen generation systems that utilize MCEL's Hydrogen on Demand® liquid fuel technology. "Differential Pressure-Driven Borohydride Based Generator" describes, among other things, passive fuel system designs which do not require components like pumps that can be a significant cost driver in fuel cell products.

The second application describes systems that offer the benefits from infinite shelf life of solid borohydride fuels while still using the Company's traditional Hydrogen on Demand(TM) technology. This patent covers systems that allow fuel solutions to be mixed on demand when hydrogen generation is required. Systems and designs based on this technology have been implemented and tested in larger portable power systems by Millennium Cell and its partners.

"These new patent allowances bolster our ownership of proprietary fuel cartridge architectures. The architectures allow us and our licensees to uniquely deliver products with the low cost and infinite shelf life achievable from chemical hydrides. Chemical hydrides can deliver lower per watt hour cost performance than alkaline and lithium batteries in portable devices," commented Adam P. Briggs, Millennium Cell's President. "Lowering the cost of our Hydrogen on Demand® systems is necessary to achieve success in the commercial opportunities we are pursuing with our partners."
