A
hydrogen-powered public bus is in the works for Greece as a team of scientists
and Companies embarked upon a project to produce the country’s most environmentally
friendly vehicle to date.
Transport Minister Michalis Liapis
handed over a 40-seater bus to the team of scientists and companies so
they can outfit the vehicle to run on hydrogen fuel cells. Several European
cities are already using hydrogenpowered buses, which are more expensive
to run than diesel-powered ones but far cleaner, as they emit only water
vapor, not harmful emissions.
Advent Technologies SA will work
closely with Tropical SA on the Fuel Cell part of the project. Tropical
S.A. will do all the needed modifications concerning the body as well as
the chassis of the MiniBus and will design the “Roof Rack (grid)” that
will integrate all the Hydrogen related systems.
The system includes the fuel cell
system, the power inverters, the electronics & controllers compartment
and the inverter tech a/c unit.
ADVENT TECHNOLOGIES S.A. is engaged
in research, development and commercialization of new materials and systems
for renewable energy sources such as fuel cells and photovoltaic systems.
The major effort of the Company focuses
on a high temperature PEM fuel cell system based on its proprietary technology.
The Company, founded by researchers
from the Foundation for Research & Technology-Hellas (FORTH-ICEHT)
and the University of Patras in February 2005, is a spin-off operation
from these two academic institutions and is funded by industrial partners
(Germanos – Sunlight S.A., Velti S.A, ILPRA S.A.), private investors, and
the Greek Ministry of Development under the PRAXE B program for matching
capital.
Advent Technologies is headquartered
in Athens, Greece and occupies research, development and manufacturing
space in the Patras Science Park (PSP) and in its US location in Boston
Massachusetts.
