"Research into alternative and clean energy solutions for Ontario is critical to the future and security of our energy supply," said Mark Romoff, President and CEO of Ontario Centres of Excellence. "Bruce Power and the University of Waterloo are valuable partners for our Centre of Excellence for Energy. By investing in new ideas and building relationships in this way, we are working to foster the development of innovative new tools that can conserve energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide new energy solutions for Ontario."
OCE is matching Bruce Power's $75,000 commitment to the project.
"This funding comes at an important time when, now more then ever, people are looking for solutions to climate change," said Duncan Hawthorne, Bruce Power's President and Chief Executive Officer. "Clean nuclear power producing clean hydrogen is a powerful combination for addressing our environmental concerns."
Bruce Power first announced the Bruce Power Hydrogen Economy Development Study, which investigates using off-peak hydrogen production from nuclear power and distributive electricity generation, in July 2006.
Alexander (Sandy) Stuart, Chairman of the Canadian Hydrogen Association, praised the Ontario Centres of Excellence, saying, "Their involvement will help strengthen the research, development and innovation underway and will build Canadian strength with hydrogen systems."
The Canadian Hydrogen Association (CHA) and The Hydrogen Village joined the program in 2006 as strategic partners.
