Nagoya, May 13 (Jiji Press)--Chubu Electric Power Co. <9502> said Thursday it will launch a pilot plant to make methanol from scrap wood, which the company claims to be Japan's first.

The plant, built at Chubu Electric's thermal power plant in Mie Prefecture, can treat two tons of scrap wood to make a maximum of 1,000 liters of methanol per day. It is intended to confirm the viability of the new technology to pave the way for future commercialization. The pilot operation, conducted on behalf of the government-affiliated New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, is scheduled to begin next Monday and continue till November.

The scrap wood to be used at the plant will include drift wood collected from dams for hydraulic power plants, which the company currently incinerates as waste.

Methanol is seen as a sulphur-free clean energy source that can be used as an alternative to gas oil and liquefied natural gas. It can also be used as a hydrogen source for fuel cells.
