Samsung Electronics along with Samsung SDI have demonstrated a docking station incorporating a 12,000Wh fuel Cell for its Q35 ultraportable laptop. Utilizing its DMFC technology (Direct Methanol Fuel Cell), Samsung claims a maximum power output of 20W.

Samsung also claims that the fuel cell can attain an energy density of 650Wh/L, about four times as much as anything the competition has shown in the past. With the claim of 12,000Wh of energy storage and depending on the laptop's power settings and usage this fuel cell could theoretically power the laptop continuously for a whole month.

Another key feature of this fuel cell system is that it is said to be very quiet, with the level of noise emitted being very close to that of an actual laptop.

Samsung also announced that a minature version is under development which can power a laptop for more than 15 hours on a 100 cc of fuel, less than the size of a paper cup.

Kim Heon-soo, Vice President of Samsung's Computer Division said the development has advanced the time to commercialize fuel cells for a notebooks by a year, when all safety standards are established. He also stated that the firm will spearhead efforts to introduce fuel cells into the market by the end of next year.
