| Congressman
Albert R. Wynn, a senior member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, led
a briefing and tour of the new Maryland Energy Research Center (MERC) with
state and local elected officials. Senior University officials discussed
the exciting work they are doing in the area of emerging alternative energy
technologies such as hydrogen, ethanol, and plug-in hybrids.
“I am proud that the University of
Maryland at College Park, a premier research institution, is increasing
its role in energy research. The only way our country can reduce
its dependence on oil is through the use of alternative energy sources
and technologies such as ethanol, hydrogen and plug-in hybrid cars.
I am excited to help the University conduct its cutting edge research,”
said Wynn.
Congressman Wynn, as Co-Chairman
of the Hydrogen Caucus, secured $100 million in the Energy Policy
Act of 2005 to finance twelve demonstration projects to produce hydrogen
through clean energy sources such as nuclear, wind, and solar. The
University of Maryland would be eligible to compete for these demonstration
projects. Further, in the House Defense Appropriation bill, Congressman
Wynn requested and secured $2.5 million for the University, Ballard Power
Systems, and the Army Research Laboratory to do research on fuel cells.
The research will be part of an effort to provide clean and quiet hydrogen
fueled electricity generators for our troops in the field.
