Hawaii's first-ever hydrogen vehicle fueling station will open at Hickam Air Force Base on Thursday.

The station is part of a multimillion dollar renewable energy development program launched in Hawaii five years ago by the state and U.S. Air Force.

The station will be used to fuel the Air Force's small fleet of experimental hydrogen-powered vehicles, including a 30-foot shuttle bus that has been operating at Hickam since 2004.

The station is deployable and can be used on a battlefield with a portable generator. It is the first of its kind for the U.S. Department of Defense.
