Up to now critical early warning system, e.g. off-grid black ice warning systems on motorways, or water level gauges at rivers and dams, often failed exactly at those times, when they were needed most: due to the fact that the solar system could not produce enough power anymore due to darkness, snow, or rain, the early warning system was not able to continue measuring. This would force operators of these systems to considerably over-dimension their PV system at high cost to ensure at least a basic power supply in bad weather conditions. As a consequence, these PV systems would supply much more power than needed in the hot summer months, which would go to waste, while power in winter still was not sufficient. With the combination of PV and fuel cell, the new EFOY Outdoor System will now provide reliable power all year round.

The central part of the EFOY Outdoor System is the EFOY fuel cell by SFC. With an M10 EFOY fuel cartridge containing 10 liter of methanol, the EFOY fuel cell will provide 9.1 kWh electrical energy (resp. 760 Ah at 12 V). The back of the EFOY Outdoor Box is equipped with connectors for solar modules and electric consumers. Communication with the EFOY Outdoor Box is carried out via LAN/WLAN or GSM/GPRS. The maintenance-free EFOY fuel cells can be remote controlled from a PC, the system automatically communicates with the user via email or SMS, for example if the fuel cartridge has to be replaced.

The EFOY Outdoor Box is designed for off-grid applications in the medium power range between 1 and 65 Watt. Thanks to the battery buffer, even peak loads of over 100 Watt are covered. Higher performance systems are available on request.
