A chlorate production unit in Berscia, Italy, with a fuel cell installation designed by Uhdenora, represents what is claimed to be the first large-scale, commercial fuel cell installation in the energy-driven chlorine and chlorate sector worldwide.

The installation utilizes hydrogen, created as a by-product of chlorate production, to generate 120 kW of electricity that is directly supplied back into the process.

Fuel cell developer Nuvera Fuel Cells says the system will capture thousands of kg/y of hydrogen previously released by the facility, thereby cutting operating costs and lowering emissions of greenhouse gas.

The company is looking into system application in the megawatt power range on its Brescia and Torviscona facilities.
