Kuraray is planning to roll out its hydrocarbon electrolyte membrane and membrane-electrode assembly used for direct-methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) in 2008, and intends to formulate new catalysts to exploit the characteristics of its membranes.

In its most recent mid-term business plan, GS-21, the company has positioned fuel cells as a new growth area of focus.

Kuraray will also begin the development of electrolyte membranes targeted for application in polymer electrolyte fuel cells used in the stationary household and automotive markets.

The company's hydrocarbon electrolyte membranes are the result of a combination of its proprietary elastomer polymer and film forming technology.

The new membranes can reduce MCO by 40% during power generation and boost by 60% the maximum DMFC production, without loss in conductivity of hydrogen ions.
