Exactly as the first World Cup game began, two hydrogen-powered busses within Berlin’s transportation network (BVG) were launched.

Operating within the FIFA-sponsored project, “Green Goal”, they will contribute to the effort to make public transportation within the World Cup host city much cleaner. The German Minister for the Environment, Sigmar Gabriel, referred to the transfer of the busses to a renewable resource with much future potential as follows: “Hydrogen from renewable sources makes a substantial reduction of greenhouse gases and pollutants. On a long-term basis, it can become a substantial component of a lasting traffic strategy.”

As a part of the EU promotional program HyFLEET:CUTE (started in 2006), the BVG will have 14 buses in operation until autumn. A nearby petrol station was established which provides a pump for hydrogen alongside its conventional fossil fuel counterpart, both in gaseous and liquid form.

Green Goal is an environmental concept pioneered by the organizational committee of the FIFA World Cup 2006. He Federal Ministry for the Environment (German) provided much support. The emphasis of the project is to create quantitative environmental goals in the water, waste, energy and transportation sectors.
