Stuart Energy Receives Order for Hydrogen Fuel Station in California
Publication date: 28-April-2004

Stuart Energy Systems Corporation (TSX: HHO) announced today that it received an order for a small scale Stuart Energy Station for vehicle fueling (SES-f), which will be placed at the National Fuel Cell Research Centre (NFCRC) located at the University of California, Irvine. The SES-f will provide clean hydrogen fuel to the Toyota Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles (FCHV) managed by the NFCRC.

The small SES provides a compact and complete hydrogen infrastructure solution for on-site hydrogen fueling and distributed power applications. This product was developed in response to the growing market demand for a scaled version of Stuart Energy's larger on-site energy stations. The addition of the small SES to Stuart Energy's commercial line-up of mid-range to large-scale SES systems creates the only commercial product line available in the market that reliably delivers on-site production of hydrogen in outputs ranging from 1 Nm3h (38 scfh or approximately 2 kg a day) to 100's of Nm3h. The full SES product line is comprised as a modular system consisting of Hydrogen Generation, Compression, Storage, Power and Fuel Dispenser Modules, configurable for small to very large hydrogen infrastructure applications.

Toyota Motor Sales USA purchased the SES-f for installation at the NFCRC, and has commissioned the NFCRC to evaluate the performance characteristics of the small SES-f in cooperation with Stuart Energy. Consistent with this effort, Stuart Energy is using the small SES as a platform for its HomeFueler(R) product, which is being developed to enable hydrogen vehicle owners to fuel their cars in the comfort and convenience of their own homes.

"Stuart Energy's proprietary fueling stations (SES-f) are being deployed in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific as part of the early network of "hydrogen highways" and "hydrogen villages" being developed, and can effectively keep pace with the growth of hydrogen vehicles and power applications as these products come to market," commented Jon Slangerup, President and CEO of Stuart Energy. "We are very pleased to be working with Toyota, the NFCRC and other strategic partners and customers to validate our small SES system."

This SES-f (for vehicle fueling), to be installed at the NFCRC, will use Stuart Energy's patented Vandenborre IMET(R) water electrolysis and intelligent fueling system technology to safely and reliably generate 1 Nm3h (or approximately 2 kg a day) of hydrogen. Using the Compression Module, the SES-f will deliver high-pressure hydrogen at 414 bar (6,000 psi) to a 12 kg Storage Module. The system will also be configured for fast fueling with a Fuel Dispenser Module to dispense fuel cell grade hydrogen to vehicles at 350 bar (5000 psi).
