| Earlier this
weekend, President Bush spent some time promoting hydrogen fuel technology.
He said it could be the answer to rising fuel costs. Here in the Coachella
Valley, a local bus service is offering a new mode of transportation that
could help.
You better not doze off at the bus
stop when Sunline's new hydrogen bus pulls up. That's because the bus has
no engine and makes almost no noise. The bus runs on hydrogen, so it has
no emissions. It's one of only four of its kind in the United States.
Sunline is offering free rides on
the new bus, now through Labor Day.
“It's a charming and great bus.”
Rider Ron Freels was impressed with
the sleek design of the bus it was made in Belgium and cost over 3 million
dollars.
“It is quite unique, as far as the
performance and it's comfortable.”
The release of the new hydrogen powered
bus is timely because gasoline prices are at an all time high. The hydrogen
bus, which was funded by federal and state grants, is here in the desert
because proponents want to see how it runs in the hot weather.
“Right now we're the test bed of
the industry.”
Mike Oglesby, who runs Sunline, says
he's confident that clean hydrogen fuel is the future of transportation,
especially with rising gasoline prices.
“Its zero emission and the only thing
that comes out of the tailpipe is water, and the water is drinkable.”
The clean-fuel bus can go 350 miles
before it needs hydrogen refueling and it will be cruising on different
bus routes every day so that everyone in the desert can have a chance to
experience this new way of riding the bus.
