CSA America spearheads development of 15 new fuel cellstandards
Publication date: 22-April-2004
Source: CSA America
CLEVELAND, OH-CSA America, Inc., a world-leading standards development organization, today officially announced the publication of the first of 15 new leading-edge standards it is developing for the global usage of fuel cells. The series of standards will focus on facilitating the harmonization of global standards and regulations for fuel cell applications by establishing requirements for the installation, performance and interchangeability of selected fuel cells and fuel cell power systems.

The first standard in the series to be published has been approved as an American National Standard by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as ANSI/CSA America FC 1-2004, Stationary Fuel Cell Power Systems. Known as FC 1, the standard includes requirements for the operation, construction, and performance of stationary fuel cell power systems and is designed to benefit the fuel cell industry by setting new guidelines that incorporate a wider range of fuels and technologies.

"As fuel cell technologies emerge, the standards development process requires innovative thinking, solutions and an in-depth knowledge of this growing sector," said Spencer Grieco, Vice-President, Standards, CSA America, Inc. "We are the only standards organization in North America with more than a decade of proven experience in providing solutions for the fuel cell industry. Manufacturers who produce stationary and portable fuel cells, as well as fuel cell modules, can be confident in their products that meet the applicable ANSI/CSA requirements."

The new FC 1 standard supersedes the previous ANSI Z21.83-1998 Fuel Cell Power Plants standard, which was also developed by CSA America and set the very first known standards for the industry. The newest standard incorporates the latest industry technologies and includes new requirements for fuels such as hydrogen gas, methanol, ethanol, kerosene, diesel, gasoline, zinc particulate, as well as natural gas, methane gas mixtures and liquefied petroleum gases.

CSA America serves as the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) Administrator to the International Electrotechnical Commission's (IEC) Technical Committee (TC) 105, Fuel Cell Technologies. By working with the IEC, CSA America is facilitating the development of a series of international standards for the global usage of fuel cells, which are also being used as seed documents for a new series of ANSI/CSA standards. It is also working with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to facilitate the development of an ISO standard for hydrogen generators using fuel-processing technologies.
