South Korea and China on Thursday opened a joint research center to produce hydrogen energy by making use of atomic energy, the Ministry of Science and Technology said. The opening ceremony for the center, located at Qinghua University in Beijing, was attended by ranking South Korean and Chinese officials. The center will develop technologies to produce hydrogen by resolving water through the utilization of intense heat from nuclear reactors. The facility is expected to greatly contribute to helping South Korea build reactors capable of producing 30,000 tons of hydrogen annually by 2019, a ministry official said. Hydrogen is considered a realistic alternative to fossil fuel and is competitive in price. Vice Minister of Science and Technology Lim Sang-kyu, who attended the event, asked China to help South Korea make inroads into the Chinese nuclear power station sector, saying that South Korea is the sole nation which has experience in the whole process of building reactors, ranging from design to construction and operation. ~
