| General Electric's
Global Research facility in Niskayuna, N.Y., will receive a Department
of Energy grant for research on hydrogen fuel cells.
GE will receive $300,000 annually
for five years.
The funding was part of $19 million
in awards announced on Jan. 24 by Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman. The
money is being targeted to advance fuel-cell membrane technology.
"Investments in fuel-cell and hydrogen
research today will enable America to lead the world in developing clean,
hydrogen-powered automobiles that will reduce our dependence on imported
oil," Bodman said. "This funding will help overcome technical barriers
and bring hydrogen and fuel-cell technology from the laboratory to the
showroom."
The Bush Administration has committed
to spending $1.2 billion over a five-year period to help American firms
develop hydrogen powered automobiles in order to reduce dependence on foreign
oil.
