| BURLINGTON,
Vt. -- A hydrogen fueling station will be built to convert electric energy
and water into hydrogen fuel with a $1 million grant announced Wednesday
by Rep. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.
The hydrogen fuel will be used to
supply a car retrofitted to run on hydrogen.
The car, a Toyota Prius, will be
nearly free of emissions, Sanders' office said.
The project will a testing ground
for hydrogen automotive technology in cold climates, Sanders said.
"Using hydrogen fuel has the potential
to nearly eliminate emissions from our cars and to help break our dependence
on imported oil," Sanders said. "One of the important challenges in developing
hydrogen-fueled vehicles is making sure that they perform well in cold
weather states."
The station on Pine Street will extract
hydrogen from water and dispense it into a hybrid-test car.
The Burlington Electric Department
will provide the electricity.
The system and car are expected to
be running by the spring.
