Tokyo--Osaka Gas and Kyocera began Japan's first trial operation on November 28 of a cogeneration system that uses 1kw SOFCs (solid oxide fuel cells) developed for household use at NEXT 21, an experimental housing complex that Osaka Gas constructed in Tennoji, Osaka, in October 1993.

Jointly worked on by the two companies since April 2004, the cogeneration system achieves a power generation efficiency of over 45% (LHV and AC net efficiency base), the world's highest level for a 1kw system.

The test will allow both companies to verify system reliability, select issues to focus on for commercialization, perform technical evaluations, and measure energy-saving effects and CO2 reduction in typical homes. The partners are aiming for system commercialization in fiscal 2008.
