Brunnthal, Germany--After successful completion of the development phase, SFC Smart Fuel Cell’s new Fuel Cell Power System for soldiers FCPS is now ready for field tests. The new portable system, which consists of one fuel cell, one fuel cartridge, and one hybrid battery, will revolutionize portable power supply for soldiers. It replaces the need to carry several spare batteries for powering electronic systems and thus considerably increases the tactical operating range. During a 72 h mission at 20 W average power the FCPS achieves 70 percent weight reduction over batteries. The FCPS is able to smartly charge batteries and to directly power electronic systems carried by the soldier.

The new system is already scheduled for field tests in several military programs in the US and Europe. Very recently, SFC fuel cell technology was selected for the Office of the Secretary of Defense’s Defense Acquisition Challenge Program (DACP) (see DuPont press release at this pdf link). “This success is based on the maturity of our technology and on our extensive experience in fuel cell commercialization,” says Christian Boehm, Manager Technical Engineering at SFC. “In our fuel cell development projects with US and European military organizations we have demonstrated our capacity to consistently increase TRL (Technical Readiness Level). I am very confident that we will see the first fielded FCPS by the end of 2007.”

SFC is exhibiting the new FCPS at Milipol, Paris, from November 21 to 25 at booth K150 (More information at www.milipol.com). SFC is now approaching military organizations and system integrators for integration of the new FCPS fuel cell technology into soldier systems and for its demonstration in field tests starting in January 2006.
