Albuquerque firm to help develop hydrogen train engine

(Albuquerque-AP) -- An Albuquerque-based company has been chosen to help design and manufacture a hydrogen generation system for a fuel cell-powered locomotive.

MesoFuel Incorporated is one of several companies tapped for the project. If successful, it could produce the largest fuel cell-powered vehicle ever built.

Arnold Miller, president of the prime contractor, says MesoFuel was chosen because of its compact, ammonia-based hydrogen generation system.

In MesoFuel’s trademarked system, ammonia is used to create hydrogen, which powers fuel cells.

The project is being funded by the U.S. Army Research in Michigan. The goal is to retrofit an Army diesel-electric locomotive.

The technology could eventually be used to power commercial trains and subway systems.
