ONTARIO: Fuel Cell Technologies Ltd. (FCT), a leading producer of solid
oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems, today announced the signing of a contract
for a 5kW SOFC fuel cell system with BP Shipping Ltd. Since June of this
year FCT has signed contracts totaling $1.2 million for systems to be delivered
by year end.
BP Shipping will use the system on
board one of its liquid natural gas (LNG) tankers to demonstrate the use
of SOFCs to power auxiliary shipboard applications. The SOFC system will
be fueled by the LNG “boil-off” to generate electricity more efficiently
than the traditional steam boilers currently employed on board the tanker.
“The sale to BP Shipping is an example
of how Siemens and FCT are working together to bring SOFC systems to the
market and illustrates the benefits of FCT’s sales distribution relationship
with Siemens,” said John Stannard, FCT’s President and CEO. “Siemens’ network
extends FCT’s reach, and we look forward to further developing this relationship
to achieve more sales in Europe as our product becomes readily available.”
Siemens and FCT continue to cooperate
in the technology development for these 5kW SOFC systems as part of a Memorandum
of Understanding signed in November 2004.
Over the past decade, FCT has designed
and built custom fuel cell power systems. Fuel cell systems are the future
of power generation because of their environmental benefits and high efficiency.
FCT's SOFC systems are designed to operate on a variety of readily available
fuels and provide a highly efficient, environmentally friendly method to
produce on-site electricity and heat that can be used in a variety of remote,
commercial, industrial and residential applications. In 2005 FCT commenced
production of its 5 kW SOFC systems and is now delivering systems to customers
around the world.
