| This is one
exclusive filling station – it is open only to the few who drive fuel-cell
cars.
In Portsdown Road, the station is
Singapore's second hydrogen kiosk, built at a cost of S$1.5mil (RM3.36mil),
excluding land cost. It is due to open next month, and will serve the six
Mercedes-Benz A-class fuel-cell cars here.
The cars – which run on electricity
produced by a chemical process involving hydrogen and oxygen –have been
on trial for a year, clocking a combined 125,000km.
That is about 20,000km each, slightly
more than the annual distance covered by an average passenger car here.
The combined mileage of the Singapore
fuel-cell Mercedes-Benz is one-third the 370,000km clocked by the total
fleet of 60 fuel-cell A-class cars on trial around the world.
DaimlerChrysler said it was satisfied
with the performance of the cars here. Despite the heat and humidity, the
cars have had few reliability problems beyond the first few months. Overall,
they have been in the workshop for less than 10% of the time.
