| The
new guest now in residence on the roof of the Sheraton New York Hotel &
Towers is adding its own bit of energy to the Big Apple. The 250-kW fuel
cell is providing up to 10% of the hotel's energy and providing waste heat
to the facility's hot-water system in a cogen design estimated to save
up to $70,000 annually in energy bills.
The installation, which is also tied
to an existing backup generator, was largely financed by a $920,000 grant
from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority . The
hotel is renting the unit, manufactured by FuelCell Energy Inc. , from
PPL Corp , an Allentown, Pa. -based energy company.
This is the third fuel cell to be
installed in a Sheraton property, with two others now operating in New
Jersey and a fourth planned for a San Diego hotel.
A fuel cell also has been added to
the distributed generation portfolio of the U.S. Marine Corps Air Ground
Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif. The 250-kW unit will help the
facility meet seasonal base-load requirements that can reach 15–20 MW during
the summer, when temperatures can reach 120°F.
