TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- Nippon Oil Corp. (5001.TO), JJapan's largest oil refiner, said Thursday it plans to start selling its newly developed kerosene-based hydrogen fuel cell in the retail market in 2006.

The company will provide a 10-kilowatt pilot fuel cell to the New Energy Foundation, which will begin test-running it in February at a convenience store located in the Shinagawa area of Tokyo, a company official said.

The foundation, established in 1980, is a non-profit organization that conducts research on clean energy, including solar power generators and hydrogen fuel cells.

Nippon Oil developed the technology to extract sulfur from kerosene and then produce hydrogen from the kerosene. The company jointly built the pilot fuel cell with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (7011.TO).

The 10-kilowatt fuel cell could cover electricity demand equivalent to the volume typically used at a small- or medium-sized commercial facility such as a restaurant or drugstore.

"In the future, we hope to sell the fuel cell at about Y2 million to Y3 million per unit in the domestic market," the official said.

Other Japanese refiners have also speeded up efforts to develop similar technologies to produce hydrogen from refined oil products, including naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas, in an effort to capitalize on expected demand for hydrogen fuel cells.
