TOKYO, Jan 20, 2004 -- Japan Energy Corp., which is under Nippon Mining Holdings Inc. (TSE:5016), will begin developing operations in the area of new energy.

It will start by installing wind power generation equipment at an oil refinery in either Okayama Prefecture or Ibaraki Prefecture. The firm will invest roughly 500 million yen (US$4.6 million) in the equipment, which will have an output capacity of around 1,700kw, and it aims to begin selling electricity from this facility to power companies as early as 2005.

In addition, the company will begin research this fiscal year on a 5kw home-use fuel cell that runs on liquefied petroleum gas. Japan Energy expects to complete the project in fiscal 2005.

Japan Energy, which established in April 2003 a special section for operations, aims to diversify in anticipation of intensifying competition in the electricit market amid the ongoing deregulation.
