London's most famous landmark, Trafalgar Square, will set the stage on Monday 3 October 2005 for a series of fuel cell demonstrations in association with the Ninth Grove Fuel Cell Symposium, one of the world's leading fuel cell events. The Trafalgar Square demonstration is sponsored by the world leader in fuel cells, Ballard Power Systems. Other partners include the London Hydrogen Partnership, Transport for London and the Canadian High Commission.
An inflatable marquee next to Nelson's Column will showcase a wide variety of stationary and portable fuel cell exhibits. These will educate thousands of people on the "nuts and bolts" of what fuel cells are all about, and how they can be applied to consumer electronic gadgets such as mobile phones, right up to large scale units in buildings. Here is a flavour of just a few of the exhibits on show – to receive further information and a full schedule of events sign up now at www.grovefuelcell.com.
BOC will showcase the hydrogen process with its Ech2o car, which it claims is capable of travelling around the world (a total of 25,000 miles) using less energy than it takes to power a light bulb! The hydrogen powered car would need just 25 watts of electricity for the entire journey, and emits only water. The car, with a top speed of 30mph, would take just over a month to finish the journey, without any stops...
Microcab introduces “Life Without Oil” and the particular educational theme that will be pressed home is the long-term potential to operate the Microcab – a fuel cell powered taxi – on hydrogen produced by sustainable means. This hydrogen could be manufactured from water by electrolysis, using surplus energy from wind farms and photovoltaic arrays on buildings.
Voller will be showing the Voller Energy VE100 – a hand-held portable 100 watt battery re-charger and mobile generator which is ideal for recharging batteries in portable electronic devices. This demo will show a lap top computer or portable TV powered by the VE100 unit.
MTU CFC Solutions GmbH will exhibit a model of its HotModule combined heat and power system, and provide visitors with first-hand information on how this large stationary fuel cell is already in service around the world providing both electric power and heat to buildings such as hospitals, offices and even a brewery.
Baxi Group is at the forefront of product development, researching and evaluating selected commercially viable alternatives to traditional forms of heating and hot water comfort. european fuel cell GmbH (efc) – a Baxi Group Company - is the leading proponent in the application of hydrogen fuel cell technology for home heating and power and will introduce the general public to its Home Energy Centre beta test unit. The unit generates 1.5kWe of electricity and 2.9kWt of heat combined with an internal boiler with 15kW output for peak heat demand. efc is committed to conducting large scale trials of the unit within European timescale directives.
Ballard Power Systems, world leader in fuel cell technology, will highlight their mission to develop fuel cell power as a practical alternative to internal combustion engines through technology leadership. To date, more than 3.5 million passengers have driven or ridden in about 130 Ballard-powered vehicles on the road today. Learn more about what Ballard is doing with Power to Change the World®.
Other Exhibitors taking part in the Trafalgar Square Marquee demonstrations include siGEN, Johnson Matthey, Ceres Power, London Hydrogen Partnership, Transport for London, Fuel Cells Canada (with a number of Canadian Companies) and several UK Universities.
Outside the Marquee, will be a range of fuel cell vehicles, bikes and scooters (led by the London Bus from the CUTE project). News of these and other Exhibitors and their activities will be broadcast during the coming weeks leading up to the opening of the Ninth Grove Fuel Cell Conference and Exhibition.
The Demonstrations will continue on 4-6 October 2005 in association with the Ninth Grove Fuel Cell Symposium outside the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre (opposite the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey), where a variety of vehicles will be waiting to offer delegates and visitors attending the Conference and Exhibition a ride and tour around key landmark sites of central London.
