| Tokyo, Aug.
22 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Environment Ministry said Monday it will start
using fuel cells at its headquarters office block in central Tokyo from
Wednesday, the first introduction of the environmentally friendly power
source to a central government building.
The fuel cells, to be leased from
a fuel cell development company, will emit no carbon dioxide and produce
electricity through a chemical reaction between oxygen and hydrogen procured
from hydrogen cylinders.
But with a maximum generating capacity
of only 2 kilowatts, an amount equivalent to the power used by one household,
the fuel cells will supply only about 0.1 pct of the ministry's power demand,
the ministry said.
The prime minister's official residence,
built in April, also uses fuel cells for part of its power supply.
