ALLIANCE,
Ohio—SOFCo-EFS Holdings LLC was recently awarded an 18-month program by
General Technical Services, a contractor for the U.S. Army, to develop
a critical subsystem that will convert existing military logistic fuel
into a fuel supply that is compatible with fuel cell power systems.
Fuel cells are promising candidates
for meeting the military’s need for mobile electric and auxiliary power
systems. To be practical power sources for the military, however, fuel
cells must be able to use logistic fuels that contain up to 3,000 parts-per-million
sulfur.
As part of the award, SOFCo-EFS will
develop the components of a new desulfurizer-reformer subsystem that will
reduce the fuel sulfur content to an acceptable level for a solid oxide
fuel cell and convert the fuel into a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
Solid oxide fuel cells use hydrogen and carbon monoxide to produce electricity.
The focus of the program is to demonstrate
the ability to reform a complex hydrocarbon fuel containing sulfur in a
laboratory environment. The work will be conducted at the SOFCo-EFS facility
in Alliance, Ohio. Future plans include integration of a desulfurizer-reformer
subsystem with a fuel cell and other plant equipment for independent operation.
This program supports SOFCo-EFS’
objective of being a major supplier of fuel cell and fuel processor components
to commercial industry and the military for a range of applications.
About SOFCo-EFS Holdings LLC
SOFCo-EFS Holdings LLC, headquartered
in Alliance, Ohio, is managed by BWX Technologies, Inc., both of which
are wholly owned companies of McDermott International, Inc. SOFCo-EFS develops
planar solid oxide fuel cell components for stationary and mobile power
systems, as well as gaseous and liquid fuel processors that support a broad
range of fuel cell applications. SOFCo-EFS has established a patented solid
oxide fuel cell design that provides for superior performance and reliability
at competitive costs. The SOFCo-EFS approach combines state-of-the-art
ceramic materials with the manufacturing technology for multi-layer ceramic
packages currently used by the microelectronics industry. SOFCo-EFS’s versatile
fuel processing technology is being integrated into solid oxide fuel cell
systems being developed by SOFCo-EFS, as well as other industry stakeholders.
