A revolutionary energy system based on wind power and hydrogen has been switched on in Shetland.

The PURE project will initially power a small industrial unit in Unst, it's the first entirely off-grid combined wind and hydrogen system in Europe.

Engineers at the PURE project in Baltasound have carried out final tests on an energy system that could revolutionise the way we produce energy.

Over the last three years, a small group of graduates have developed a power system that produces no carbon dioxide emissions and is based on two domestic wind generators.

The project is the brain child of an electronics graduate from Robert Gordon University. And besides powering a small office block at the Hagdale Industrial Estate, the system also produces hydrogen as clean fuel for a converted electric car.

The £300,000 project has received funding from Europe, the UK government, the Scottish Executive as well as the local enterprise company.

Those involved in the project hope similar schemes will help reduce the need for burning fossil fuels.
