NEC Reports it has developed an Improved Fuel Cell System For Notebook Computers

NEC reported Wedneday that it has developed an improved methanol based micro fuel cell system to run notebook personal computers.

The new micro fuel cell system is reported to have as much as 20% greater efficiency than the similar system that NEC demontrated on June 30. At the same time they reported that they have also reduced the size of the micro-fuel cell by this same 20% figure.

Starting tomorrow Sept.17th and running through until Sept.30th the company will demontrated this new micro-fuel cell system at the WPC Expo 2003  in Makuhari, Japan.

Earlier this year NEC said planned to commercialize this micro-fuel cell system as early as the end of 2004. This commercial product will, according to the company run a laptop for 5 hours on one single cartridge of methanol.

They also reported that they plan to commercialize an "advanced version" of this fuel cell that would run a laptop for as much as 40 hours by the end of 2005.
