Denmark could see the first commercial testing of a new hydrogen powered train.

Three towns in western Jutland, Vemb, Lemvig, and Thyborøn, are understood to be committed to the train and will provide local funding. The European Union has also promised investment.

The train is to be developed by the new Hydrogen Innovation & Research Center (HIRC) based in western Jutland. “Our goal is to get Europe’s first commercially viable hydrogen train in Europe,” said Jens-Chr. Møller, HIRC’s CEO. “There are many international projects evaluating the use of hydrogen in cars and busses, but plans for hydrogen trains are very few and mostly centred in the United States and Japan.’

Once launched the train will run on a 125-year old, 45 mile long railway.
