Alain Castro, director and commercial lead in the Fuel Cell area said “This is a really exciting project and opportunity for World Energy Labs. We are a company whose expertise lies in electrochemistry and the characterization of electrochemical systems. Our company released the Interrogator™ product last year, and the market is quickly realizing that it’s the most cuttingedge tester for standby battery systems in mission-critical environments. However, this project with Medis Technologies, along with our involvement with CMISE as a research partner, is helping to demonstrate that our company’s expertise allows us to develop tailored solutions to crucial challenges being faced by industries far beyond the battery markets.”
John Miller, chief scientist in the fuel cell area of World Energy Labs added: “Fuel cells and the potential of the fuel cell industry as a whole have been in the press for years. However, the reality is that fuel cells are just recently leaving the laboratory and becoming commercially viable sources of stored energy. World Energy Labs’ rapid diagnostic tools will aid in fuel cell optimization, design, and manufacturing processes. This will also lead to field portable systems for assessing the health of fuel cells throughout their operational lifetime. This first project is being undertaken with a leading fuel cell company, Medis Technologies which plans to have its products available for the market at the end of this year.”
This fuel cell project is focused on the application of frequency response analysis (FRA) to the manufacturing and quality control of specific fuel cells. The Interrogator™ FRA technology has the ability to employ on-board custom algorithms for a wide range of electrochemical applications. The Interrogator™ brings a high level of accuracy that allows rapid testing that would be impossible using laboratory based FRA equipment. Algorithms developed in this program will be used to screen fuel cells for specific production quality requirements.
The use of the Interrogator™ in the laboratory is another especially interesting application. The Interrogator™ is quicker and more versatile than the typical frequency response analysis equipment than the client has been using until today. This diagnostic tool will enable the optimisation of operating conditions for the fuel cells and assist the development of algorithms for assessing specific failure modes in operational fuel cells. These algorithms can then be ported to further Interrogator™ units to create portable diagnostic tools that can give precise information about the state of health of fuels cells whilst they are operating in the field. By tracking the health of products over time, fuel cell manufacturers will have valuable feedback for improving cell design.
