Plug fuel cells used on Long Island solar project

The Long Island Power Authority on Wednesday dedicated a power system on Long Island combining solar technology with Plug Power Inc.'s fuel cells.

The system is the first on Long Island to combine solar power with fuel cells, according to Long Island Power Authority officials.

Installed at the Local 25 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers headquarters in Hauppauge, the system is intended to serve as a training center for electricians and apprentices so they can become more familiar with the technology.

Three arrays of photovoltaic panels with a capacity of 15 kW were installed on the roof of the building with energy supplemented by Latham-based Plug's (NASDAQ: PLUG) 5 kW fuel cell. Fuel cells generate electricity by converting the energy of natural gas through an electrochemical process that doesn't involve combustion and the accompanying pollution.

In addition to electric power, the system also provides hot water to the facility. It will operate as part of the power authority's electric grid.

The installation is part of a state-funded, 10-year, $355 million program by the power authority to encourage the use of renewable energy technology.
