HOMOSASSA SPRINGS-- Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park will move into the next generation of energy technology on Tuesday, March 1st with an announcement of a one-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell system to power the park’s Wildlife Encounter Pavilion.  The partnership between the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Progress Energy will not only provide clean energy to the park, but it will also expose hundreds of thousands of visitors to this emerging technology.

DEP Deputy Secretary Allan Bedwell will be joined by Progress Energy Vice President for Regulatory and Corporate Relations Vinny Dolan, local officials and park staff to unveil the project.

Less than two weeks ago, Governor Jeb Bush announced the Florida Hydrogen Technology Act to advance Florida’s hydrogen economy through $12.9 million in demonstration project funding and $2.1 million in tax incentives.  Already a leader in hydrogen energy technology, the Sunshine State was selected as one of three sites nationwide to demonstrate hydrogen fuel cell cars and hydrogen fueling stations with Ford, BP American and Progress Energy. Last week, Florida broke ground on its first hydrogen fueling station to service the world’s first commercially available hydrogen shuttle busses-- a partnership with Ford, ChevronTexaco and Progress Energy.
