Japan's NOK Develops Better Separator For Fuel Cells

TOKYO-- NOK Corp. (TSE:7240) has developed a separator for fuel cells that integrates the separator with the seal. This not only reduces the chance of defects during the manufacture of fuel cells, but also reduces the number of processing steps, helping manufacturers lower their costs.

The separator is the part of the fuel cell stack that keeps the hydrogen fuel out of contact with the oxygen in the air. It must be tightly sealed to prevent leakage of hydrogen.

NOK has technologies for oil seals and O rings, and it has been working for five years to develop an integrated seal for fuel cells. The company aims to have a practical version ready by 2010, with an eye on the widespread adoption of fuel cells for cars.

The company said it can quickly move into volume production once a practical version has been developed. In addition, the same sealing technology can be used for water-purifying filters, hot-water systems and power generators.
