FUEL CELL FUTURE
Gasoline: the non-renewable,
environmentally unfriendly, politically
unstable fuel that's powered our personal transportation
for over a hundred
years. In the 70's we awoke to gasoline's limitations
and liabilities
which brought on a rush of innovation from electric battery
powered
cars, to solar designs. Today as global unrest
again focus's our attention
on alternative energy, automakers are investing in hydrogen?powered
fuel?cell technology.
Fuel cells combined with drive-by-wire
technology will provide
automakers with more than just an alternative to gasoline.
By using
electrical signals to operate the accelerator, brake
and steering
functions, there doesn't have to be any foot pedals or
a steering column,
so designers have more freedom to re?imagine the vehicle's
body shape and
interior to meet various customers needs and lifestyles.
General Motors plans to have
a drive-by-wire fuel cell powered vehicle
ready for the market by the end of this decade.
Whether a hydrogen
economy will be a reality by then will depend on cooperation
between the
largest corporations and governments in the world.
