SASKATOON -- Saskatchewan is taking a lead role in thee exploration of hydrogen as a fuel for vehicles.

Premier Lorne Calvert unveiled a modified pickup truck in Saskatoon Monday that runs on gasoline and hydrogen.

The Saskatchewan Research Council is also developing a monitoring system that will detect damage in the large high-pressure cylinders used to hold the hydrogen in such vehicles.

The detection system, if successful, could become an integral part of monitoring in-board pressurized cylinders in vehicles in the future.

The total cost of the two projects is more than $1.3-million.

The research council developed another truck nine months ago that runs on a combination of diesel and hydrogen.
