Ecuador's state oil company Petroecuador and the Central University have signed an agreement to study hydrogen as a source of energy, Petroecuador said in a statement Monday.

The US$114,805 one-year study aims to determine the feasibility of industrial hydrogen production for the country's energy needs over the next 50 years, the statement said.

An industrial hydrogen-producing pilot project plant will also be built as part of the investigation, the statement said.

Hydrogen batteries can be used in vehicles to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
