      EPA Approves ZAP smart Cars
Publication Date:28-December-2004
Source:  The Yomiuri Shimbun
It appears that smart cars are finally ready for sale here in the U.S., at least in limited numbers. Electric vehicle marketer ZAP reports that the smart cars imported into the U.S. for sale by the company have finally received a certificate of conformity by the Environmental Protection Agency. According to ZAP, this will allow the company to move forward with its plan to establish a dealer network to sell socially responsible cars to like-minded buyers.

Earlier this year, ZAP signed an exclusive distribution contract with importer SMART-Automobile LLC – no relation to the vehicle’s European manufacturer, smart GmbH - for the rights to sell the smart cars in the United States.

Smart cars are set to go on sale here through official smart dealerships in 2006. Official marketing channels for the smart car opened within the past month in Canada.
