Hydrogen Solar Ltd, the UK-based hydrogen production research and development company, has been awarded $400,000 by the University of Nevada Las Vegas Research Foundation for the first year of a multi-year project to demonstrate solar hydrogen production using Tandem Cells".

The project involves joint research and development on a hydrogen refilling station in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The overall award is potentially worth $1.2 million to Hydrogen Solar over a three year period.

Hydrogen Solars CEO, Dr. David Auty, said "This project is the first step to commercializing our Tandem Cell technology in the American arena. We believe we have a highly efficient and world leading product for producing inexpensive, carbon-free hydrogen. We expect this to be a key technology as we move towards a future hydrogen economy."

The Tandem Cell is a highly efficient solar-based technology for producing inexpensive, carbon-free hydrogen. Hydrogen Solar Ltd owns the world wide exclusive rights. to the Tandem Cell and is building a portfolio of hydrogen technologies and Intellectual Property aimed at the new hydrogen economy,

Hydrogen Solar, via its wholly owned subsidiary Hydrogen Solar LLC, will join a project consortium which includes Altair Nanotechnogies Inc, (NASDAQ: ALTI) and University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Research Foundation (UNLVRF), Proton Energy Systems (PES) and the Las Vegas Valley Water District.

HYDROGEN SOLAR LTD AWARDED GRANT TO DEMONSTRATE TANDEM CELL" TECHNOLOGY

Hydrogen Solar LLC and Altair will undertake research and product development using nanotechnology processes to further raise the performance of the Tandem Cell. In August, Hydrogen Solar Ltd announced it had doubled the efficiency of the units, converting more than 8% of sunlight energy directly into Hydrogen.

Central to the Tandem Cell technology is the high performance of the photo-catalytic nano-crystalline thin films developed by Hydrogen Solar. These are used to gather photons of incident light and directly split water into its constituent elements.

ABOUT HYDROGEN SOLAR

The Tandem Cell concept was co-invented by the Swiss Federal University of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and the University of Geneva (UoG), and was made possible thanks to R&D support by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy over a considerable period of time. It is the subject of a patent by Prof. Michael Graetzel (EPFL) and Prof. Jan Augustynski (UoG). Prof. Graetzel is a scientific advisor to both Hydrogen Solar and Altair.

The Tandem Cell is currently the prime technology of Hydrogen Solar, but the company also own rights to biological processes for generating hydrogen. Work on Bio-Hydrogen is centred at the UKs University of Glamorgan where research is underway on hydrogen production from wheat-starch based food industry co-products.

Hydrogen Solar is also actively seeking to acquire compatible technologies in hydrogen generation and storage.
