   EMTEC nets fuel cell money

The state has issued a grant totaling $719,200 to the Edison Materials Technology Center to develop ways to bolster Ohio's standing in the fuel cell industry.

The grant, from the Third Frontier Fuel Cell Program, comes on the heels of a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy for the same purpose.

Kettering-based EMTEC will develop and commercialize an improved manufacturing process for membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) used in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells.

The objective, according to information from EMTEC, is to make the PEMs thinner and more efficient and to optimize performance.

The Third Frontier award is intended to help Ohio meet the expected market for MEAs, projected to be $9 million in 2009 and $40 million shortly thereafter.

EMTEC, in turn, expects to capture 30 percent of that market, which would lead to the creation of 100 to 150 jobs locally.
