DOE FreedomCar Budget Won't Be Settled Until Fall

San Diego— The FreedomCar research and development budget for fiscal year 2005 won't be settled until Congress acts on broader appropriations measures this fall, it was revealed at a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) diesel conference here.

President George W. Bush asked Congress for $156 million for DOE's hydrogen/fuel-cell oriented FreedomCar program in 2005. This program also includes modest funds for high-efficiency clean-diesel research.

FreedomCar's budget would fall from $178 million in fiscal 2004. Despite steep cuts in diesel-oriented R&D, DOE hopes to continue some joint industry/government cooperative research in low- temperature combustion schemes, such as HCCI, renewable fuel blends and waste-heat recovery via thermoelectrics. DOE hopes to announce this month the industry/national laboratory/academia participants in five separate R&D thermoelectrics.

While hydrogen fuel cells someday might play a greater role in light-duty vehicles, "hydrogen is not a likely answer for the commercial sector," because of inherent energy-density/weight issues for trucks, DOE research shows.
