Hydrogenics Wins Repeat Power Module Sale in Hawaii For 'Step Van' Integration at Hickam Air Force Base
Publication Date:30-September-04

Hybrid Fuel Cell Power Plant Will Power Propulsion as Well as Off-Board Power Applications

Hydrogenics Corporation (Nasdaq: HYGS; TSX: HYG), a designer and manufacturer of hydrogen and fuel cell systems, has been contracted by the High Technology Development Corporation (HTDC) in Hawaii to supply a HyPM 65 kW Fuel Cell Power Module to power a 'step van'. The unit will be shipped by the end of the year.

"Thanks to HTDC, the Hickam Air Force base in Hawaii is quickly becoming recognized as a leader in demonstrating hydrogen fuel cell capabilities," said Pierre Rivard, President and CEO of Hydrogenics. "We are excited to again be working with HTDC after such a favorable experience with our previous integration of a power module into a bus. It is very rewarding to see our customers and partners coming back to us for additional initiatives."

The installation of the power module will take place in Honolulu, HI, at the Hawaii Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies (HCATT). Demonstration activities will take place at Hickam Air Force Base. In addition to routine base operations, the step van will have the capability to serve as a Ground Power Unit for the Air Force to power up aircraft and equipment during maintenance operations.

"HCATT is pleased to be continuing its technology development relationship with Hydrogenics. Their responsiveness and product quality meet the standards required to support our advanced power technology projects at the Air Force National Demonstration Center at Hickam Air Force Base," said Tom Quinn, Director, HCATT (a department within the HTDC).

Vehicles such as the step van are seen as prime candidates for hydrogen power module integration as they are often part of ground fleets for companies. The central depot typically used by ground fleets makes the development of a hydrogen infrastructure more feasible.

The HyPM 65 power module is the most recent addition to Hydrogenics' power products line up, providing customers with a wider range of power capabilities. The HyPM 10 was the Company's first commercial power module model with almost 30 deliveries to date, to various customers covering a range of applications. A previous project with HTDC involved the combination of two HyPM 10 modules to provide a 20 kW fuel cell system that was hybridized with batteries and integrated into the propulsion system of a bus.

HTDC is a State agency tasked with the development and growth of Hawaii's commercial high technology industry. It provides broad based programs ranging from incubation to federal research and development partnerships to marketing.
